'Fela!' On Broadway: More Performances Added

The new Broadway musical, 'Fela!,' is the hottest ticket in town.

So much so that the demand for the exhilarating production - tracing the life and music of groundbreaking African composer, performer and political activist Fela Anikulapo-Kuti - is so high its producers have announced that beginning Jan. 6, 2010, Wednesday matinee afternoon performances will be added to the schedule.

"Fortunately the show appeals to audiences of all ages, and we've received numerous requests from educators asking for matinee performances during the week that could accommodate student groups," lead producer Stephen Hendel told BV Newswire on Friday. "Wednesdays seem the natural fit, so that we can also attract the regular matinee theatergoers."

'Fela!,' currently playing at Broadway's Eugene O'Neill Theatre, stars a multicultural cast led by Sahr Ngaujah (recipient of an Obie Award for his performance in the title role Off-Broadway) and Emmy Award-winning actor Kevin Mambo (who recently starred in the Pulitzer Prize winning play 'Ruined'), alternating in the title role. Playing two of the most important women in Fela's life are Tony Award-winner Lillias White (as his mother) and Saycon Sengbloh (as his American love interest).

Bill T. Jones, an internationally renowned choreographer who made a splash on Broadway a few years ago with 'Spring Awakening,' is the creative force behind this musical marvel.

"The Fela Kuti project dropped from the sky," Jones told the New York Times last year during the show's Off Broadway run. "I didn't know I was looking for such a thing, but ... there's something about the man that calls out for a very poetic treatment. His life is so mythic in its scale."

Since it opened in late November, 'Fela!' has received some of the best critical praises of the season and has a thriving box office.

As previously reported by BV Newswire, hip-hop and Hollywood A-listers Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter (pictured above with White during Opening Night) and Will Smith & Jada Pinkett Smith have come on as producers of 'Fela!'

The new schedule, beginning Tuesday, Jan. 5 will be as follows: Tuesday at 7pm, Wednesday at 2pm & 8pm, Thursday and Friday at 8Fela Kutipm, Saturday at 2pm & 8pm and Sunday at 3pm (except Sunday, January 10 when curtain is 2pm).

Ticket prices for 'Fela!' start at $27 and can be purchased online via Telecharge, by phone (212) 239-6200 or in-person at The Eugene O'Neill Box Office, which is located at 230 West 49th Street in New York City.
