NAACP: Who in the Hell Left the Gate Open

Outstanding Reality Series category causes a stir

I must say, I am thoroughly disappointed with NAACP and some of the 2010 nominations for the NAACP Image Awards. According to the Image Awards One World One Dream statement:

"The NAACP Image Awards is the nation's premier event celebrating the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in the arts (motion picture, television, recording, and literature), as well as those individuals or groups who promote social justice through their creative endeavors."

Overall, the organization has an impressive list of some of the most talented African Americans in the entertainment industry. And then there was the Outstanding Reality Series category. The Real Housewives of Atlanta represented everything wrong with pop culture today.

- living beyond one's means and foreclosing on mansion (check)
- placing greater importance on social status than spending time with children (check)
- perpetuating the stereotype of materialistic black women (check)
- cross-dressing men wearing high-heels and fake eye lashes (check)

I am sure that I was not the only one who tuned in every Thursday night to Bravo TV to give my undivided attention to my guilty pleasure. I am also sure that I was not the only one who was thoroughly embarrassed by the antics on the Real Housewives of Atlanta.

RHOA is not an example of "the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in the arts" nor did they "promote social justice through their creative endeavors." It was just plain garbage of mostly tomfoolery cat fighting and materialistic over-consumption. Shame on NAACP for letting this one slip through.
